Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Solar energy works wonderfully across all parts of India, all year round. With rooftop solar systems, we can even estimate the total power they’ll generate annually.

Of course, there are some natural variations. During the monsoon, energy production dips a bit, while summer brings peak performance.

The map below highlights how much power different states can produce each year with rooftop solar systems. This data reflects the performance of well-maintained systems with regularly cleaned panels across the country.

A solar system can power all your appliances—if you choose the right size! Here's how to figure out what works for you:

1. Know your power usage

  • Check your electricity bills for the past year.
  • Find your average energy consumption over six months or a year.

For instance, if you use 7,000 units annually, you'll need a 5kW solar system.(Calculate: Yearly usage ÷ units produced per kW 7,000 ÷ 1,400).

#2 Estimated Solar System size as per appliance usage

#3 Miscellaneous factors to consider

  1. Shadow Freespace to your rooftop:
In order to generate electricity, at least 100 square feet of shadow-free space is needed per kilowatt of system capacity.
  2. Sanctioned load by your discom:
Sanctioned load is the maximum amount of electrical load that a discom allows a home to draw from the grid at a particular point in time. Before you decide on the size of your system, it is essential to figure out what the load is for your electricity connection.
  3. Rooftop suitability:
To handle the weight of solar panels, the roof should be made of reinforced concrete, metallic sheet or shingles. An asbestos roof is unsuitable for solar panels.

In India, the two most common types of solar energy systems are on-grid and off-grid systems, which differ in their use of battery storage. What you choose will depend on your energy consumption, the size of your roof, and the amount of sunlight that your area receives.

Maintenance for solar panels is not just required, but essential for their optimum performance and longevity. Neglecting maintenance can lead to a whopping 40% reduction in power generation, in just a few months.
A solar system should be cleaned and maintained by professionals using the right tools and techniques. Here's what maintenance should include:

  • Panel cleaning
Over time, dust, dirt, leaves, bird droppings and debris can build up on solar panels, thereby reducing their efficiency. These can be washed away by spraying water with a hose pipe. But besides occasionally cleaning them with water, you should refrain from self-cleaning and leave it to experts. Professionals use a 4-5 inch long soft- bristled brush and special cleaning solutions to gently remove any stubborn dirt or bird droppings.
  • Mechanical & electrical health check
Loose connections can cause electrical problems and reduce the system's efficiency. Regularly checking and tightening connections can prevent this issue.
  • Monitoring performance
    Regularly monitoring the solar system's
performance can help detect any issues early on and prevent costly repairs.

Switching to solar can be a complex process, but it doesn't have to be difficult. A reputable solar provider will facilitate all the steps, end-to-end, on your behalf.

Don’t choose an installer lightly. Solar is a one-time investment, so here’s what to look for in a solar provider:

  1. Experience and Reputation
Choose a provider with a strong track record and positive customer reviews.

  2. Custom System Design
Ensure they can design a system tailored to your needs.

  3. Quality Products
Opt for high-quality panels and inverters with solid warranties.

  4. Reliable Customer Service
Find a provider that responds quickly and knowledgeably to your questions.

  5. Affordable Financing
Compare costs and look for EMI plans to ease upfront payments.

  6. Permit and Subsidy Assistance
Select a provider who handles government paperwork and subsidies for you.

he cost of installing solar depends on factors like the type of panels, system size, and the inverter you choose. To make solar more affordable, the government provides subsidies for homeowners and housing societies.

On July 30, 2022, PM Modi introduced the National Portal for Rooftop Solar, along with a unified solar subsidy scheme for the entire country. Here's what you need to know:

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) ensures quick subsidy transfers directly to your bank account within 30 days after inspection by your local discom.

To qualify for the subsidy, you need to meet these simple criteria:

  1. Solar panels must be manufactured in India.
  2. Panels should comply with ALMM specifications.
  3. The solar system should be an on-grid rooftop setup.

With the subsidy in mind, here’s an estimated cost of a rooftop solar system based on commodity prices as of March 2023.

Important Note: Installation costs can vary based on several factors, including the type of solar panels, inverters, mounting structures, net-metering charges, and after-sales service options.

The estimates provided here are based on:

  • Made-in-India bi-facial monocrystalline panels
  • Mounting on a metallic shed
  • No added maintenance package or contract
  • Standard installation charges with string inverters

Personal Loan
Some banks provide solar loans, letting homeowners pay for their solar systems over time. However, these loans often come with high interest rates and can be tricky to secure.

Bundle with a Home Loan
If you're building a new home, you can combine your home loan with a solar loan. Currently, the State Bank of India (SBI) is the only bank offering this option.

EMIs via Solar Companies
Many solar companies offer EMI plans to make the switch to solar more affordable. Look for plans with low-interest rates and flexible repayment terms, letting you pay over 1, 3, or 5 years.

Your actual savings with solar will depend on factors like your electricity usage, system size, location, and local electricity rates.

Here’s an estimate of what you could save in a year after switching to solar.

Did you know?
Rooftop solar gives a much better return on investment compared to gold, mutual funds, or fixed deposits. Here’s a quick look at the potential returns you can expect if you invest ₹2.1 lakh in each option.

Battery Storage for Solar Systems

If your area faces frequent or long power cuts, battery storage is essential to keep things running.

Solar systems use two types of batteries: lead-acid and lithium-ion. Lead-acid batteries are more common because they’re affordable, while lithium-ion batteries offer better performance but cost 2.5 times more.

Efforts are underway to reduce the cost of lithium-ion batteries, as they’re more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Choosing the Right Solar Panel for Your Home

When picking a solar panel for your home, you need to consider factors like the technology that suits your needs, the brand, and the available space on your roof. In India, the two main options are monocrystalline panels and bifacial panels.

In India, the most common types of solar inverters are string inverters and micro-inverters.

A string inverter converts the DC power from solar panels connected in series into AC power. However, if one panel stops working, the entire system’s output can drop by up to 50%.

On the other hand, a micro-inverter, about the size of an iPad, is perfect for roofs with limited space or shadow issues, as each panel works independently, maximizing efficiency.

What happens to your solar panels if a thunderstorm hits and winds reach 100 km/h? Or if multiple shadows from nearby buildings fall on them? These scenarios can happen, which is why strong and reliable mounting structures are essential.

For reinforced concrete rooftops, steel mounting structures with a hot-dipped galvanized zinc coating are ideal. The coating makes them rust-resistant and weatherproof. Homeowners often choose taller mounting structures, ranging from 6 to 9 feet, to minimize shadow interference on the panels.

For metallic sheet rooftops, aluminum rail mounting structures work best for securing the panels.
